CHAPTER SEVEN

Shunichi stared out the window from the backseat of the Cadillac Escalade, hardly seeing the buildings and people slip by. Since they’d gotten into the SUV, he, Jesse, and Evan were all quiet. Like him, he suspected they were thinking about Brandon.

He couldn’t get their final conversation out of his head, the things unsaid but implied. The thought of this being the beginning of the end for them had crossed his mind, so he didn’t know why he was surprised to learn it’d been on Brandon’s mind also. But what Brandon didn’t know was he would give up everything to follow him to New York. Now, though, he worried it might not be an option. Brandon might not let him give it up, might end their relationship with the thought he was saving him from doing exactly that.

“You doing okay, Shun?”

Evan’s voice called Shunichi from his thoughts. He glanced into the rearview mirror, meeting Evan’s sharp blue gaze in it. “Not really.”

Jesse turned in the passenger seat, peeking around it to Shunichi. “I know it’s hard. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it, too, that he’s going to New York and it’s a real possibility he’ll get this role. But I also know he’s kind of stuck where he can take his career right now if he stays here, so for that and knowing how much he’s wanted something like this and for how long, I’m happy for him.”

“I am too, and I’m proud of him getting the invitation to audition. That alone is a major honor. I’m just…worried.”

Jesse nodded. “I totally understand that. It sucks, there’re a lot of unknowns right now, but Brandon isn’t going to do anything stupid between you guys.”

Shunichi tried to summon a smile and knew barely a shadow of one touched his lips. “I don’t think anything he ever does is stupid, but he might make a decision I won’t like.”

“He’s thinking of breaking up with you,” Evan said more than asked.

Jesse snapped his head toward Evan. “No he isn’t. He wouldn’t do that.” He looked quickly back to Shunichi. “He’s not, right?”

“He didn’t directly say it, but it was there.”

“That jerkass!” Jesse faced forward in his seat, letting out an annoyed huff. “I can’t believe he’s even thinking it.”

“Depending on how this turns out, I’ll talk to him,” Evan said. “I know what he’s thinking and I’ll do what I can to stop him from making the same mistake I did.”

Jesse leaned over the center console and placed a kiss on Evan’s cheek. “At least you fixed your mistake.”

Evan lifted Jesse’s hand to his lips, kissing the back of it. “We fixed it together.”

Jesse glanced back to Shunichi. “And we’ll fix Brandon’s before he takes it too far.”

“Thanks, but if I can’t change his mind, I’m not sure how anyone else will be able to.”

“By kicking his ass,” Jesse grumbled.
